Syllabus, Strategy and Booklist to Crack CAPF AC Examination-2020 in just 4 Months

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) conducts Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF)(Assistant Commandant) Examination every year to recruit Assistant Commandant in five Central Armed Police Forces i.e. Central Reserve Police Force(CRPF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Border Security Force (BSF), Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). This year's notification has been released by UPSC on 18th of August, 2020 for 209 vacancies.

In this post we will discuss the detailed syllabus, strategy and important booklist to crack this Examination in about 4 months of time, which is remained for the Examination from now onwards. The Examination is scheduled to be held on 20th December,2020.

Syllabus of the UPSC CAPF AC Examination-2020

The syllabus given by UPSC in the Notification is as follows:

Subject wise Break-up of Questions Asked in CAPF AC Examinations (2017, 2018 and 2019)

Before moving towards detailed strategy, let us know previous year breakup of questions asked from different sections in the CAPF Examinations held in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

  1. Quant and Logical Reasoning (16%)
  2. Geography (14%)
  3. History (14%) 
  4. Science and Technology (14%)
  5. Polity (14%) 
  6. Current Affairs (11%)
  7. Institutional Setup (10%)
  8. Environment (3%)
  9. Economics (2%) 
  10. Culture (2%) 

How Should You Approach CAPF AC Examination-2020 (Paper-I)

Quant and Reasoning 

For this section you do not have to do CGLE level of Quantitative Aptitude, because in this Examination Trigonometry, Advance Algebra and Geometry questions are not asked. You have to do only Previous Years Questions and then do RS Agrawal's Quantitative Aptitude and Reasoning book. But do this selectively, mainy things in this book are not asked in this Examination.
 If you are good at Quant and Reasoning then Previous Year's Papers are sufficient for you.

Geography

For this section you have to do NCERT's 11th and 12th class NCERT books, than if you have time than you can read GC Leong's Physical and Human Geography book. You must do Map workon below given topics as well as you should also learn Top and Bottom five states in agro-mineral  production. Besides above you must read Land and People chapter at least once.
  1. 11th and 12th Class NCERT Books
  2. GC Leong (Certificate in Physical and Human Geography)
  3. Learn Top 5 and bottom 5 states in Agricultural and mineral production. 
  4. Map work (Rivers, Ranges, Vegetation, soils, National Parks and Biosphere Reserves)
  5. Land and People chapters in India year Book.

History

In this section questions are generally asked from Ancient India- Mauryas, Guptas etc.
 and Modern Indian History and Social reformers. Hence you have to do following.

  1. Theme 1 and Theme 3 of 12th Class NCERT History Books(Must)
  2. Spectrum's Modern History

Science and Technology 

For this section you must do NCERT Books from 6th to 10th class thoroughly, minute details are asked from these books then must read about DRDO and ISRO and their achievements since it's inception till today. Than you can also read Science, Communication and Defence chapters from India Year Book. It will give a boost to your preparation.

  2. Defence and Space Technology (DRDO and ISRO)
  3. Science, communication and Defence chapters from Indian year Book

Polity

For this section you must do Laxmikant, it is like Bible for any Civil Services Examination, but don't read it line by line instead do it selectively based on previous year question pattern And then you have to do important judgements, commissions and committees and Polity chapter from India Year Book.

  1. Laxmikant/Bare Acts/ constitutional and other Bodies 
  2. Important SC judgement and Cases  
  3. Important Commissions, Cabinet and Parliamentary committees/Defence Acquisition Committees
  4. Polity Chapter from India Year Book.

Current Affairs (August 2019 to October 2019)

In this section UPSC generally asks questions related to Defence, Persons/Events in News, Internal Security issues, sports. Questions are a bit on higher side in comparison to SSC CGLE and Railway Examinations but not like UPSC Civil Services Examination. Questions are generally of objective in nature and not much deeper.  For this section you don't have to do Vision IAS or any other current affairs magazines. For this section you can follow any of the current affairs magazine available in the market for SSC and other general competitive examinations.

Institutional Setup

For this section you must do following segments thoroughly in both ways i.e. static reading as well as Current Affairs.

  1. Institutions in news
  2. Law and order and Defence chapters from India year book
  3. Websites- Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Home Affairs, CAPFs, Defence Forces
  4. Defence Exercises
  5. New Defence ships, plane etc.

Environment and Ecology

For this section last 4 chapters of 12th class Biology Book of NCERT are sufficient.

1. Biology(12th Class) last 4 chapters

Economics and Culture

As very less number of questions are asked from these two sections hence you can ignore these. But if you have sufficient time and possible to do you can read.

  1. Indian Economic Development Book of 11th Class(NCERT) (for Economics)
  2. NIOS Study Material on Art and Culture (For Culture section)

How to Approach CAPF AC Examination-2020 (Paper-II)

Part-A(Essay)

In this part, 4 essays have to be written out of 6 essays asked. You can write these in either English or Hindi, no other language will be allowed. For this section you must go through the syllabus thoroughly and previous 5 years' question papers and prepare accordingly. Essays should be completed in not more than 20 minutes each, otherwise you will not be able to complete Paper-II. Hence practise essays with timer, so that in real examination you would not do any blunder.

Part-II

In this part candidate's General English Aptitude is tested. In this section you have to write 2 Reports, 2 Arguments and 1 Precis and these can only be written in English. Besides above you have to solve a questions based on a comprehension passage and some other basic English Grammar Aptitude. 
To clear this section you can follow any English Aptitude book available in the market. The two best books for English Aptitude are given below, you can choose the any one of these two.
  1. Objective General English by SP Bakshi
  2. Plinth to Paramount (English Grammar) by Nitu Singh
